Talking about the demise of Raj Kapoor, Ranbir said, ‘He passed away when I was six years old and I have a clear memory of that day. All of us kids were playing upstairs and when we looked down we saw a sea of people. I had never seen so many people in my life. That day I understood that okay, this man has some status, some value, he has done something, so so many people have come to pay tribute to him. That memory will always stay with me.’

Made strong films with moral values
While discussing Raj Kapoor’s filmmaking, Ranbir Kapoor had talked about his grandfather’s ability to tackle various social themes during his career. He had said, “If you see ‘Awara’, it was based on casteism. ‘Shri 420’ talks about greed and the underprivileged. In his later films, he made strong films with Indian moral values. Some of his earlier films spoke honestly about society, but he still managed to make them commercial and really entertaining.”

Ranbir Kapoor had said while talking about his grandfather Raj Kapoor, “In ‘Prem Rog’, he talked about the atrocities on women in a patriarchal society. In ‘Ram Teri Ganga Maili’, he compared the protagonist Ganga to the river Ganges… how it is sacred in the mountains, but by the time it reaches down, it becomes impure due to society and human habits.”

Grandfather kept up with the times
Talking about Raj Kapoor’s financial condition, Ranbir said, ‘He made Mera Naam Joker, which was a huge disaster. He lost a lot of money and even his house was mortgaged, but still he had the courage to make a film (Bobby) with new people… A 50-year-old man was making a film for the youth. He kept up with the times. He was constantly in touch with the common man and the kind of stories that people wanted to see. Making a film like Bobby at the age of 50 at that time, which speaks to teenagers, is really amazing.’

Recalling some special things related to his grandfather, Ranbir said, ‘He used to throw very big parties in his Chembur house. Most of the people from the film industry used to attend it. There was a big garden in the house and once, when I was playing there barefoot, I got bitten by a lot of red ants. It was midnight. My grandfather was in the middle of the party and was having a lot of fun, but he picked me up, took me to his bathroom and started washing my feet. That is one moment that I really remember.’
