Alia Bhatt on playful rivalry with Ranbir Kapoor over Raha’s first words: ‘She said mama first’

The Jigra actor also spoke about the first time she felt Raha’s kick during her pregnancy

Alia Bhatt, in a recent interview, shared three unforgettable experiences that have shaped her life.

The first one was the time when the actor felt her daughter Raha’s first kick during her pregnancy.

“Everyday is a discovery, but if I were to name three of my most precious moments, the first moment would be the first time my daughter kicked, when I felt a kick,” Alia told Allure.

This happened when she was filming for Heart Of Stone in Portugal. “I was filming the next day so I was in bed, ready to go to sleep, watching some content on my iPad and suddenly I started feeling a little something, a flutter, and I was like, ‘I am not watching anything to give me a flutter in my stomach, what is this? Is it a kick?’ I wasn’t sure so I waited,” she said.

“Literally I was waiting for it to happen again but the thing is that when you want the baby to kick, the baby doesn’t kick. When you don’t expect it, the baby will kick and the moment is gone.

I don’t think I slept that night, I was so excited because it was the first time I felt that I wasn’t alone, I felt there was someone with me and that was such a strange (and) special feeling,” she added.

Alia said that she couldn’t wait to share the news with Ranbir. “I got really excited and called up my husband immediately. He was asleep. He answered (the call) in his sleep and asked, ‘what happened?’ and I was like, ‘the baby kicked’, and he was like, ‘ok, that’s great’.

He was far away back in Bombay. I remember that moment very very clearly,” she shared.

Another moment for Alia was when Raha said “mama” for the first time. She said that he and her husband Ranbir Kapoor had a playful rivalry over what Raha would say first—“mama” or “papa”.

“The backstory is — there was a fight at home (about) Whether she is going to say mama first or whether she is going to say papa first. So, of course mama was like (say), ‘mama, mama, mama,’ and papa was like (say), ‘papa, papa, papa.’ And when she said that, it was just me and her, I immediately pulled out my phone and said, ‘say it say it again, what did you just say…’”.

Alia then described how Raha said “mama” in a low voice and how she made her say “mama” in normal voice for the video she was recording on her phone to show Ranbir.

She added, “We take great joy and pride in that moment. So, I remember that moment very clearly and I have it on video. So anybody who needs proof, she said ‘mama’ first.”

Another moment, Alia shared, was the day Raha was born. “The next moment that I’ll never forget in my life, no matter what happens, is the day our daughter was born. I won’t forget the moment where we first heard her sound. It was unreal. When I heard her voice, I felt like I had met God or something.

It was so emotional, sort of surreal. The minute she was put on to me, I just felt an immediate dam of love sort of burst open in our life and it just felt safe and it felt like my purpose had been met. (I’ll) never ever forget that day.”
