Deepika Padukone was pregnant on the very last days of filming for Kalki 2898 AD, director Nag Ashwin revealed.
Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh are expecting their first child in September; they announced her pregnancy in February, several months before she appeared in a supporting role in the blockbuster film Kalki 2898 AD. In the dystopian epic, Deepika plays Sumathi, the mother of a future messiah character. The film’s director, Nag Ashwin, said in a post-release interview that Deepika actually filmed two days of pick-ups while she was pregnant, while cast member Saswata Chatterjee, who plays the antagonistic military commander in the film, revealed that Ranveer paid a visit to the sets on those days.
In an interview with ETimes, Nag Ashwin said that Deepika was pregnant during the final days of filming, and added with a laugh, “There were two days when her actual child also acted in the movie.” The pick-up shot in question appears in the climax of the film, where the villain drags Deepika’s character by the hair.
Sharing more details about the scene, and Ranveer’s visit to the set, Saswata told News18, “Deepika is just ever-smiling. There is a scene in the film where I drag her by the hair. It was part of the last leg of the shoot and was shot in Mumbai because Deepika was pregnant by then. Ranveer came on set wearing an ensemble that was orange from top to bottom – tee, pants and shoes! He radiates such an infectious positive energy – he just can’t stand in one place. There was a lot of physical tussle in the scene, so I told Ranveer, ‘Don’t worry, for more physically challenging scenes, there’s a body double.’ He was so polite and humble. He smiled and said, ‘I know, dada.’”
Deepika also filmed for the upcoming Singham Again during her pregnancy, but Ranveer would’ve been a constant presence on set, considering he’s one of the main stars of the film. Singham Again is the latest entry in filmmaker Rohit Shetty’s cop universe, and will be released in November, a couple of months after the birth of Deepika and Ranveer’s first child. Kalki, meanwhile, is closing in on the Rs 800 crore mark at the box office, after a blockbuster first week in theatres.
