Veteran filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt in a new interview shared his thoughts on his daughter Alia Bhatt’s remarkable journey as an actor.
He spoke about her growth, her ability to connect deeply with her characters, and his favorite performances from her filmography.
In an interview with India Today, Mahesh Bhatt acknowledged the strides Alia has made since her debut in Karan Johar’s “Student of the Year.” He expressed that while her debut film showcased her as a fresh face in the industry, it did not quite capture the depth of her talent.
“Her raw power, and her ability to get into such a vulnerable space, and bare her heart. Highway and Udta Punjab… It was a departure from that girl who was just a mannequin in Student of the Year. You see the evolution in your child also,” Bhatt remarked.
Alia Bhatt’s performance in “Highway,” directed by Imtiaz Ali, marked a significant turning point in her career.
In the film, she played the role of Veera, a young woman who finds freedom in captivity. Her portrayal of complex emotions and the raw intensity she brought to the character garnered critical acclaim and established her as a serious actor.
Mahesh Bhatt highlighted this performance as a standout, praising her for her ability to connect with the audience on such a profound level.
Mahesh Bhatt expressed his amazement at how Alia, who grew up in the cosmopolitan environment of Juhu, managed to master the ‘adivasi’ accent in “Udta Punjab.”
He admitted, “I must say that I was devastated by Udta Punjab. I didn’t understand when did this girl, this Juhu girl exposed to our home, where we live like a normal family… How did this Juhu girl get the accent right of an Adivasi from Chhattisgarh. It was amazing. I was astounded by that.”
As Alia Bhatt continues to take on diverse and demanding roles, her evolution as an actor is evident. Her journey from a starry-eyed debutante in “Student of the Year” to a powerhouse performer in films like “Highway” and “Udta Punjab” is a testament to her dedication and talent.
